Early Life
Farhan Akhtar was born on 9 January 1974, in Mumbai as the second child of Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani, both screenwriters. He has an older sister named Zoya Akhtar who is a writer and director. Farhan was quite young when his parents split up. His father later married actress Shabana Azmi in 1984. Even after the divorce, Farhan’s mother continued to live with her children in their family home in Bandra Bandstand.
Farhan went to Maneckji Cooper School in Mumbai and later studied law at HR College, also in Mumbai. His father, Javed Akhtar, is Muslim and a socialist who sees himself as an atheist. Farhan’s mother, Honey Irani, comes from an Irani-Zoroastrian background and isn’t much into religion. She was fine with her kids growing up without any specific religious beliefs. Farhan himself has mentioned that he’s an atheist too.
Career
Farhan Akhtar began his journey in the film industry as an assistant director when he was just 17. His first directorial venture was ‘Dil Chahta Hai‘ in 2001, produced through his company Excel Entertainment. The movie was a massive hit, bagging the National Film Award for Best Film that year. Beyond directing, Farhan also debuted as an actor in the 2008 film ‘Rock On‘, a musical drama where he played a lead role alongside Arjun Rampal and Prachi Desai.
Following this, he starred in movies like ‘Karthik Calling Karthik‘ and ‘Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara’, released in 2011, which became one of the highlights of his career. Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara‘, starring Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol, and Katrina Kaif, created quite a buzz in Bollywood. He then portrayed the legendary athlete Milkha Singh in the biopic ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag‘ in 2013, co-starring with Sonam Kapoor, which turned out to be a commercial success.
