Mohan Rao Career
Mohan started acting in Kannada cinema before moving to Malayalam, Telugu, and Tamil films. He became a major star in the 1980s, delivering several hit movies and earning the title of “Silver Jubilee Star.” After a break, he made a strong comeback with new projects in 2024.
Mohan began his acting career with the Kannada film Kokila (1977). He then moved to Malayalam cinema with Madalasa (1978), which did well. Soon after, he made his Telugu debut with Thoorpu Velle Railu (1979), a remake of the Tamil film Kizhakke Pogum Rail.
Breakthrough in Tamil Cinema
Mohan’s big break in Tamil movies came with Moodu Pani (1980), where he played a complex character. The film was a hit, and he quickly became popular. Around the same time, director Mahendran cast him in Nenjathai Killathe (1980), which became a huge success and even won a National Film Award.
During the 1980s, most of Mohan’s films became box office hits, running in theatres for over 200 days. His role in Payanangal Mudivathillai (1982) made him a superstar, and because of his consistent success, he was often called the “Rajendra Kumar of Tamil cinema.”
One of his most loved performances was in Mouna Ragam (1986), a romantic drama by Mani Ratnam, which is still remembered as one of Tamil cinema’s finest love stories.
Slowing Down and Comeback Attempts
After his peak years, Mohan’s success started to decline. He tried to make a comeback by producing and directing Anbulla Kadhalukku (1999), but the film did poorly. He then began producing TV serials like Acham Madam Nanam, Selvangal, Hasiyaramayana, and Brindavanam.
Later Film Appearances
Mohan was offered a role in Unakkum Enakkum (2006) as Jayam Ravi’s father, but he turned it down. He later returned as a lead actor in Sutta Pazham (2008), a small-budget film that did well. He also acted in the Kannada film Ashokavana, which was never released.
Recent Comeback to Cinema
After 13 years, Mohan made a strong return with Haraa (2024). He also played the main villain in Vijay’s film The Greatest of All Time (2024), earning praise for his performance.
