Nana Patekar has had a long and powerful acting career in both Hindi and Marathi films. He’s known for playing intense roles and has also done comedy and direction. His work has earned him several big awards over the years.
Starting with Small Roles (1978 to 1987)
Nana Patekar started his acting career with the film Gaman in 1978. After that, he worked in several Marathi films, including Maficha Sakshidar in 1986. One of his early standout roles was playing Nathuram Godse in the British series Lord Mountbatten: The Last Viceroy.
During this phase, he also appeared in Aaj Ki Awaz, Ankush, Pratighaat, Andha Yudh, and Sagar Sangam. His performance in Andha Yudh even earned him his first Filmfare nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Recognition and Big Roles (1988 to 2006)
He got noticed in Salaam Bombay! in 1988, but it was his role as a gangster in Parinda (1989) that made a big impact.
Nana made his directorial debut with Prahaar: The Final Attack in 1991. He even trained like an Army officer for the role. Over the next few years, he did a mix of intense and offbeat roles.
He kept exploring different characters—like a ghost in Abhay, a sadistic husband in Agni Sakshi, and a deaf father in Khamoshi: The Musical. Films like Ghulam-E-Mustafa, Yeshwant, and Wajood showed more of his range. He also worked with Amitabh Bachchan in Kohram and appeared in Yugpurush and Hu Tu Tu.
In the early 2000s, he returned to the screen with Shakti: The Power. His role in Ab Tak Chhappan as a tough police officer got people talking again. He followed it up with strong performances in Apaharan and Taxi No. 9211.
Getting into Comedy and Big Hits (2007 to 2018)
In 2007, Nana showed a different side with his comic timing in Welcome, where he played a gangster who secretly wanted to be an actor. That role became one of his most popular.
He continued with films like Ek, Paathshaala, and Raajneeti. In Raajneeti, he played a powerful political figure, which earned him another Filmfare nomination.
Nana also did well in Marathi cinema. His role in Deool and Dr Prakash Baba Amte was appreciated by critics. He later portrayed the police commissioner in The Attacks of 26/11, which was based on the real events of the Mumbai attacks.
He brought back his older roles in sequels like Ab Tak Chhappan 2 and Welcome Back. While the first didn’t do well at the box office, the latter was a hit.
In 2016, he played the lead in Natsamrat, which became one of his best-reviewed performances. He also did voice acting for Shere Khan in the Hindi version of The Jungle Book. He appeared in Kaala alongside Rajinikanth in 2018.
