Early Life
Asha Bhosle entered the world on 8th September 1933, hailing from a Marathi Brahmin household in Pune. (now in Maharashtra). Her father, Deenanath Mangeshkar, was Marathi and Konkani, and her mother, Shevanti, was Gujarati. Deenanath was an actor and singer in Marathi musicals. Sadly, when Asha was nine, her father passed away. The family relocated from Pune to Kolhapur and subsequently to Mumbai.
Career
Asha Bhosle started singing in Hindi movies with the film ‘Chunariya.’ People liked her young and playful voice. In the 1950s, she faced rejection from other singers and got mainly low-quality movie songs. It was tough, but she kept going. In 1955, she got a break in the movie CID with music director O. P. Nayyar. He liked her voice and gave her more songs. Her big success came with the movie Naya Daur in 1957.
She kept singing for O. P. Nayyar until 1974. Then, S. D. Burman noticed her talent. With him, she sang many hit songs for movies like Kala Pani, Kala Bazaar, Sujata, and Teen Deviyan. She also sang duets with famous singers like Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar.
In the 1960s, she started working with R.D. Burman and became very popular. They created many hit songs together. She sang for Helen, a famous dancer in Bollywood. From the 1960s, Asha Bhosle sang energetic cabaret songs and beautiful romantic tunes. She even sang Ghazals for the movie ‘Umrao Jaan.’ As time passed, she worked with new music directors like Anu Mallik, A. R. Rehman, Sandeep Chowta, and more. Surprisingly, her voice still sounds young and lively.
