Early Life

Alokesh Aparesh Lahiri was born in Calcutta to a Bengali Brahmin family. His mother and father, Aparesh Lahiri and Bansuri Lahiri, were singers and musicians who performed classical music and Shyama Sangeet. They belonged to the Lahiri Mohan Family from Sirajganj in East Bengal, which is now in Bangladesh. Alokesh, also known as Bappi Lahiri, was their only child. His uncle was the famous singer Kishore Kumar.

Bappi Lahiri started playing the tabla when he was just 3 years old. His parents taught him at first, and then he learned from a tabla master named Samta Prasad, recommended by Lata Mangeshkar.

Ever since he was a kid, Bappi admired the American musician Elvis Presley. He loved how Presley wore lots of gold chains and jewelry. Bappi wanted to have his special look when he became famous. So, when he did become successful, he created his own “golden jewelry” style, inspired by Presley.  

Bappi Lahiri is married and has two kids. His wife’s name is Chitrani. Their daughter is named Rema and their son is called Bappa. Bappa Lahiri makes music.

Career

Bappi moved to Mumbai when he was 19 years old. His first chance in the movie world came with the Bengali Film Daadu (1972), but he got his first big opportunity to compose music for a Hindi movie called Nanha Shikari in 1973.

He became well-known after working on the Hindi movie Zakhmee in 1975. In this movie, he not only made the music but also sang some of the songs. One of his famous songs was a duet with Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar called “Nothing is Impossible”. He had more hit songs in the 1976 movie Chalte Chalte. 

Later on, Bappi Lahiri sang and made disco music for movies like Pyara Dushman (1980) and Arman (1981) with popular songs like “Hari Om Hari” and Ramba Ho Sambha Ho. His song Jimmy Jimmy was a big hit in the early 80s not only in India but also in Russia. He made more hit songs in movies like Wardat, Sahhas, and Laparwah in 1981. 

Bappi Lahiri composed music for many famous movies such as Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki (1984), Dance Dance (1987), Commando (1988), Love Love Love (1989), and Pyar Ke Naam Qurban (1990). He became very well-known during the disco era of that time. 

In 2006, he was on the famous TV show ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il Champs’ on Zee TV as a judge with singers Alka Yagnik and Abhijeet. He judged the 2007 edition of Zee TV’s ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’ and Sony Entertainment Television’s K For Kishore show, which looked for someone like Kishore Kumar. 

In a September 2007 talk, he mentioned movies like Journey from Bombay to Goa, Jhoom, Khushboo, Mudrank, Ek Hasina Ek Deewana, Jaane Bhi Do Yaroo, Budda Mil Gaya, Boothnath, and a show with the Jacksons. He also worked on the music for Sarkar Raj (2008) with S. I. Tutul.

Style Of Music

Bappi Lahiri was the first to bring disco music with an Indian twist to Indian movies. But he also copied music a lot in Bollywood. Most of his songs were sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle.

He introduced Vijay Benedict and Sharon Prabhakar to the music industry. He also worked a lot with Alisha Chinoy and Usha Uthup for his songs. Sometimes Bappi Lahiri sang using a fake name like Basavalingaiah Hiremath, for example, in the song “Bambai se aya mera dost“.

Political Ambitions

Bappi Lahiri joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on 31 January 2014 with Rajnath Singh, who was the big boss of the party back then. They wanted to fight in the 2014 Lok Sabha election. They chose Bappi Lahiri to be their player from Srerampur (Lok Sabha constituency).

Controversy 

Bappi Da won the case about who owns the music against Dr. Dre, a musician from the West. After that, Indian composer Harry Anand made a new version of the song called ‘Kaliyon Ka Chaman’. It was sung by Shaswati Phukan, a singer from Assam. Lahiri passed away because of many health problems on Tuesday night at CritiCare Hospital in Juhu.

Adah has spoken up about the controversy and says it was just bad timing. She explained, “I posted it on my Instagram two years ago on 28th March 2020. (She shared the link). The Bappi Da post on my Facebook page was set to go up a month ago. Sadly, we lost Bappi Da last week, so the post came out at the wrong time.”

Death 

Bappi went to the hospital for a month and came out on Feb 14, 2022. But the next day, he got very sick again, and they took him to Mumbai’s Criticare hospital. Sadly, Bappi passed away at 69 on Feb 15, 2022, just before midnight because of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).
