Early Life
Born as Sharada in New Delhi, to T. S. Krishnamurthy, an Education Ministry employee, in a Tamil Iyer family. Her aunt Protima Bhattacharya insisted that she start her musical education, and she did so by enrolling her in Surama Basu’s class, where she studied Rabindra Sangeet. Under the direction of classical singer Balram Puri, she commenced her official studies in Hindustani classical music. Kavita took home a gold prize from a music competition when she was eight years old. In the middle of the 1960s, she competed in the Inter-Ministry Classical Competition in New Delhi and took home multiple awards.
Career
Kavita was born into a Tamil household in Delhi with the name Sharada Krishnamurthy. To further her musical career, she relocated to Mumbai. In 1980, her debut Bollywood song received official credit in the movie Maang Bharo Sajana. Her breakthrough single was Hawa Hawai, featured on Sridevi in the 1987 film Mr. India.
Along with Lata Mangeshkar, Kavita was one of the two female soundtrack vocalists for the musical success 1942: A Love Story, directed by Rahul Dev Burman. She won the Filmfare Best Female Playback Award four times, in 2003, after winning it three times in a row from 1994 to 1996. The Indian government bestowed upon her the Padma Shri in 2005. She is wed to renowned violinist L. Subramaniam, with whom she occasionally collaborates.
Kavita’s debut Hindi film song was “Maang Bharo Sajna” from the Bengali film “Mahaprabhu Sri Chaitanya.” She soon gained recognition for her melodious voice and versatility, lending her vocals to a variety of genres, including classical, semi-classical, folk, and pop.
Kavita’s collaboration with legendary music composers like Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Ilaiyaraaja, and A.R. Rahman produced some of the most memorable songs in Indian cinema.
