Early Life

Naseeruddin Shah was born on 20 July 1950 in Barabanki town, Uttar Pradesh, into a Nawab family. Naseeruddin Shah went to St. Anselm’s School in Ajmer for his early education. After finishing school, he studied arts at Aligarh Muslim University in 1971. Later on, he went to the National School of Drama in Delhi to learn more about acting. He became successful in both popular Bollywood movies and the more serious, meaningful ones known as parallel cinema. He even acted in movies abroad, like when he played Captain Nemo in a Hollywood movie called The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Naseeruddin Shah’s older brother, Lt. General Zahiruddin Shah, had a distinguished career in the Indian Army. He retired in 2008 as the Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Planning and Systems) and commanded the 3 Corps based in Dimapur. He was married to a well-known Bollywood actress, Ratna Pathak Shah.

Career

Naseeruddin Shah started acting in Bollywood in the 1980s, gaining popularity with the film “Hum Paanch” in 1980. One of his major successes was the 1986 film “Karma” alongside Dilip Kumar. He went on to star in solo hero films like “Ijaazat” (1987) and “Jalwa” (1988). In 1988, he acted with his wife Ratna Pathak in the English film “The Perfect Murder.” Naseeruddin Shah appeared in multi-starrer Bollywood films like “Ghulami” (1985) and “Tridev” (1989). His 100th film, “Mohra” (1994), had him playing the villain. 

Naseeruddin Shah believed the line between art and commercial films had blurred. In 2000, he fulfilled his dream of playing Mahatma Gandhi in “Hey Ram.” He also worked on international projects like “Monsoon Wedding” (2001) and “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” (2003). In 2004, Naseeruddin Shah starred in the Indian adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, titled “Maqbool.” He appeared in “The Great New Wonderful” and “A Wednesday.” His Pakistani film debut was in “Khuda Ke Liye” (2007).
