Rathod is the second son of the late Pandit Chaturbhuj Rathod, who was known for his singing style called Dhrupad. He belonged to the “Aditya Gharana of Jamnagar.” He has two brothers: music composer Shravan Rathod, who was part of the Nadeem-Shravan duo, and singer Vinod Rathod. Roop Kumar is married to Sunali Rathod, who was previously married to Bhajan singer Anup Jalota. They have a daughter named Reewa.


Roop Kumar Rathod began his music journey as a tabla player. Later, he learned classical singing from his father.
