Early Life

Suman Kalyanpur was born on January 28, 1937, in Dhaka, British India (now Bangladesh), as Suman Hemmadi. Her father, Shankar Rao Hemmadi, was a Saraswat Brahmin from Mangalore, Karnataka, and worked in a top post at the Central Bank of India. Her mother, Seeta Hemmadi, was a homemaker. Suman was the eldest of six siblings.

In 1943, Suman’s family moved to Mumbai, where she received her musical training. She was always interested in painting and music, and after completing schooling at Mumbai’s famed St. Columba High School, she got admitted to the prestigious Sir J. J. School of Arts for further studies in painting. Simultaneously, she started learning classical vocal from Pune’s Prabhat Films’ music director and a close family friend, Pandit Keshav Rao Bhole.

According to Suman, initially singing was just a hobby to her, but gradually her interest in music increased, and she started learning it professionally from Ustad Khan, Abdul Rehman Khan, and Guruji Master Navrang.

In 1958, Suman Hemmady tied the knot with Ramanand Kalyanpur, a Mumbai-based businessman, and took on the name Suman Kalyanpur. Following their marriage, he faithfully accompanied her to every recording session. Suman Kalyanpur’s daughter, Charul Agni, relocated to the United States after getting married. Later, her granddaughter, Aaishanni Agny, returned to India and established an NGO in Mumbai in honor of her grandmother.

Career

Suman Kalyanpur began her singing career in the early 1950s. She recorded her first song, “Aaja Re Ab Mera Dil Pukare,” for the film Chhoti Bhabhi (1955). The song was a huge success and established Suman as a promising young singer.

Suman Kalyanpur went on to sing for many popular Hindi films in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. Some of her most memorable songs include:
