S.P. Balasubrahmanyam was born On June 4, 1946, in Konetampet, Pallipatt. A renowned exponent of Harikatha was Mr S. P. Sambamurthy, father of SPB. His sister S.P. Sailaja is a former actress-singer in Tollywood, married to Subhalekha Sudhakar. He and Savitri S. were wed. He has a daughter, Pallavi, and a son, S. P. B. Charan. In Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, on September 25, 2020, he passed away. His son S. P. Charan is also a popular South Indian singer, actor, and producer.
S.P. Balasubrahmanyam developed an interest in music at an early age, studied musical notations, and learned music out of his own interest and enrolled at the JNTU College of Engineering Anantapur in order to become an engineer. During his engineering studies, he continued to pursue music and won prizes in singing competitions.
Career
On December 15, 1966, Balasubrahmanyam made his playback singing debut in the Telugu film Sri Sri Sri Maryada Ramanna, which had music composed by his guru, S. P. Kodandapani. In sixteen languages, he has almost 40,000 songs recorded. With almost 40,000 songs recorded, he held the Guinness World Record for the most songs recorded by a performer.
When Balusubrahmanyam was little, singing became a hobby of his. From an early age, he showed an interest in music, learning notation and how to play instruments like the flute and harmonium by himself while listening to his father. Balu traveled to Ananthpur to enroll in JNTU’s engineering program since his father wanted him to become an engineer. He then dropped out of the course after contracting typhoid, and he joined AMIE. He continued to follow his pastime and won numerous singing competitions. He was recognized as a talented vocalist at yearly college concerts there. A few acquaintances gave him referrals and suggested that he sing in Madras.
A Telugu Cultural Organization with its headquarters in Madras hosted a music competition for amateur vocalists in 1964. Balu’s life took a significant shift once he took home the first prize. He was mentored by SP Kodandapani, the music director. Movies from Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam subsequently started to come in.
Only a few Malayalam songs were sung by SPB. Even though it was thought that Yesudas’ voice was more suited for sad Tamil songs, SPB has performed some classic sad Tamil songs, including “Naanum unthen uravai,” “Nenjukkulle,” and “Kuyilappudichu.” Popular Telugu TV shows Paadutha Theeyaga on E-TV, Paadalani Undi on MAA-TV, Ede Thumbi Haaduvenu on “E-TV Kannada,” and Ennodu Paattu Paadungal on JAYA-TV have all been hosted by him.
