Early Life

Saif Ali Khan, popularly known as Junior Pataudi, was born in New Delhi on August 16, 1970, to the legendary actress Sharmila Tagore and the then-Nawab of Pataudi, Mansoor Ali Khan, a former captain of the Indian cricket team. Saba Ali Khan and her Bollywood actress sister Soha Ali Khan are Saif’s two sisters. He attended The Lawrence School in Sanawar for his early schooling, and then Lockers Park School in Hemel Hempstead, United Kingdom. Saif received his degree from the UK’s Winchester College. Despite his royal upbringing, Saif remained grounded and passionate about acting, aspiring to carve his path in the world of cinema.

Following thirteen years of marriage, Saif announced that she and Amrita Singh were divorcing. Actress Kareen Kapoor was his later wife, wed in 2012. Saif is the father of four children: Taimur and Jeh Ali Khan, two kids from his marriage to Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan, two from his previous wife, Amrita Singh.

Career

Yash Chopra and Umesh Mehra served as Saif Ali Khan’s instructors when he first began his career in movies. Following a dismal 1992 start with Parampara, Saif went on to produce two huge singles in 1994: Yeh Dillagi and Main Khiladi Tu Anari. He received high appreciation for both of the movies in which Akshay Kumar costarred, and the latter garnered him a nomination for the first time ever for Best Supporting Actor at the Filmfare Awards.

Many films, including Yaar Gaddar (1994), Aao Pyaar Karen (1994), Ek Tha Raja (1996), Bambai Ka Babu (1996), Tu Chor Main Sipahi (1996), Dil Tera Diwana (1996), Hameshaa (1997), and Keemat: They Are Back (1998), were released after his popularity with Main Khiladi Tu Anari. Not a single movie made a splash in the reviewer or box office. Nothing was working for Saif during this time, and many believed that this marked the end of his career. Saif’s career graph began to improve after a lengthy run of failures with roles in films such as Yeh Hai Mumbai Meri Jaan (1999), Aarzoo (1999), Kachche Dhaage (1999), and the ensemble cast family drama Hum Saath-Saath Hain (1999), which made a box-office collection of 27 crores INR.

Dil Chahta Hai, a comedy-drama, was his next mainstream and critical hit. The movie won the National Award for Best Feature Film and was written and directed by Farhan Akhtar. The film, which explored the changes in the lives of three friends—Saif Ali Khan as Sameer, Aamir Khan as Aakash Malhotra, and Akshaye Khanna as Siddharth Sinha—was based on their lives and inspired a surge of new trends among Indian youth. Saif won the Zee Cine Award for Best Supporting Actor, the IIFA Award for Best Performance in a Comedy Role, and the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Comedy Role for his performance.

Saif then starred in three unsuccessful box office films: Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein (2001), Na Tum Jaano Na Hum (2002), and Darna Mana Hai 200. After a string of failures, the actor made a spectacular return with Kal Ho Naa Ho, directed by Nikhil Advani in 2003 and co-starring Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta. Saif won the Zee Cine Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and the IIFA Award for Best Supporting Actor for the film, which was well-received by reviewers and performed well at the box office. Saif gave one of his best performances in Kunal Kohli’s romantic comedy Hum Tum, which was released in 2004 and earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor.

The actor and director Vidhu Vinod Chopra worked together in the epic play Eklavya: The Royal Guard in 2007. Despite having a strong ensemble cast that included Sharmila Tagore, Boman Irani, Vidya Balan, and Amitabh Bachchan, the film was a box-office failure. However, that year, it was selected as India’s official submission for the Academy Awards. After this failure, the actor starred with Rani Mukherji in Siddharth Anand’s family drama Ta Ra Rum Pum. Jawaani Jaaneman and Laal Kaptaan are two of his previous releases. Dil Bechara is included in his 2020 release. After that, he starred in the films Adipurush (2023), Vikram Vedha (2022), Bunty Aur Babli 2 (2021), and Bhoot Police (2021).

Controversy

Saif Ali Khan and two journalists got into a physical brawl in 2004 outside of a Mumbai restaurant. The journalists said that after being asked to leave the restaurant, Saif and his associates had attacked them. Saif refuted the accusations, saying he and his pals had been provoked by the media. A lengthy legal battle and public outcry followed the incident, which lasted for several years. Saif was exonerated of all accusations in 2008 because there was insufficient evidence.
