Early Life
Pankaj Kapur was born on 29th May 1954 in Ludhiana, Punjab, India. He liked acting and theatre when he was young. He studied in Punjab and then went to the National School of Drama to learn more about acting.
In 1979, he married Neelima Azeem, who was an actress and dancer. They lived in New Delhi and had a son named Shahid Kapoor in 1981. But they separated in 1984. Later, in 1988, Pankaj Kapur married Supriya Pathak, who is also an actress. They have a daughter named Sanah Kapur and a son named Ruhaan Kapur.
Career
After finishing school at the National School of Drama, he played for four years. Then, he got a part in the movie Gandhi directed by Richard Attenborough. As a director, he has done over 74 plays and TV shows, including Mohandas B.A.L.L.B., Wah Bhai Wah, Sahabji Biwiji Ghulamji, Drishtanth, Kanak Di Balli, Albert’s Bridge, and Panchvan Savaar.
His first film role was in Shyam Benegal’s Arohan in 1982. He played Pyarelal Nayyar in Gandhi. He acted in many art films like Mandi, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho!, Khandhar, and Khamosh. He appeared in TV shows like Karamchand, Zabaan Sambhaal Ke, Lifeline, Neem ka Ped, and Philips Top 10.
He acted in Chameli Ki Shaadi, Ek Ruka Hua Faisla, Yeh Woh Manzil To Nahin, and Jalwa. He won his first National Film Award for Raakh in 1989. He acted in Roja and won a Special Jury Award for Ek Doctor Ki Maut in 1991.
He came back to TV with Office Office in 2001. He won a National Film Award for Maqbool in 2004. He acted in The Blue Umbrella, Dus, and Halla Bol. He returned to TV with Naya Office Office.
In 2013, he acted in Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola. In 2019, he wrote his first book ‘Dopehri’. He is now in the TV series ‘Naya Office Office’ and the movie Bheed.
